When taking control is the best thing to do
May is National Mental Health Awareness Month.
What comes to mind when you think of mental health?
Depression. Anxiety. Addiction. Bipolar disorder.
Most often you think of a disease and the negative effects on the people who live with it and their loved ones.
And while I’m all for deepening our awareness and compassion for all mental health issues and making sure they have access to the help that’s needed, I think we’re missing a huge piece to the puzzle.
Mindset.
Daily thinking.
Your primitive brain takes over on most days and tells you stories that don’t hold water.
And – you believe them anyway.
You have no idea what you’re capable of because you are believing the stories your brain tells you as if it’s reporting the news. Oh and that brain has evidence to back up its claims, too. It looks into your past to find all the ways it can prove you can’t do what you want to do in the future.
But here’s the deal.
It never looks for proof of what you CAN do.
That’s how your primitive brain works.
It’s all about looking for danger and holding you back.
So you go on living your life thinking you’re a victim of what’s happening around you.
You believe you’re at the affect of other people’s behavior.
You believe that your life can’t possibly change until the world around you changes.
“When I lose the weight, then I’ll…”
“When I get a new boss, then I’ll love my job.”
“I wouldn’t yell so much if my kids would behave.”
“When I land this next client, then I’ll take a break.”
I totally get it. I lived a large part of my life the very same way.
Until I decided not to.
I learned that I have the power to control the thoughts that I want to focus on.
Me. No one else.
So do you.
Your mental health is THE most important thing you can have.
Period.
It drives everything.
What if you decided not to listen to that part of your brain?
What if you decided to use your prefrontal cortex – the most powerful part of your brain instead?
That’s where all the sizzle lives.
That’s where your imagination creates freely.
That’s where you dream of having more, doing more, and being more.
That’s where all that you are inside has the opportunity to be seen by you and shared with the rest of the world.
I see who you are.
You are bold and brilliant in your own unique way.
You are caring and loving, but if someone tries to mess with someone you love, watch out. Mama bear ain’t havin’ any of that.
You are fiercely loyal.
You can handle whatever life throws at you.
You are more powerful than you know.
We need that version of you.
Every. Damn. Day.
Always.
P.S. Isn’t it time you decided that your mental health is the number one thing that you need to pay attention to? To invest in? And that starts with your thoughts.
