What I learned wrestling a Hosta plant

What if life didn’t have to be hard?
Oh, I know what you’re thinking because I used to think it, too.
“I have to work hard to get ahead.”
“Success doesn’t grow on trees. I have to make it happen.”
“I have to work long hours to get it all done.”
“If I want it done right, I’ll have to do it myself.”
These beliefs and many, many more would spin around in my head, dictating my behavior day in and day out.
Even in my personal life.
I remember one spring day a while back I had made a plan to plant the flowers I purchased in my garden.
Now, I love being in my garden playing in the dirt while adding beauty to my back yard. It’s one way I feel creative.
But this weekend was different. I woke up feeling pressure to ‘get things done’ and made a very long list of what I wanted to accomplish. (Do you ever do this?)
More like what I had to accomplish.
I gathered my tools, dirt, plants, gloves and headed outside.
I had a plan and it was flawless.
I dug out the old plants I didn’t want anymore only to realize the replacements wouldn’t grow well in that area. They needed more sunlight.
Delay.
I found a new spot but would need to remove four huge Hosta plants to make room.
Another delay, but I kept at it.
Then I realized I couldn’t plant around the fountain because it hadn’t been assembled yet. (That’s my hubby’s area).
Yet another delay.
By this time, I was pretty frustrated and wanted to quit, but my brain kept telling me I had to complete the planting that day.
Then – it started to rain.
Damn.
I had a flawless plan – until it fell apart.
The entire time I was outside I was pissed off – at the weather, my hubby, the delays – and my brain kept the negativity going at a rapid-fire rate.
The more I tried to control my situation, the harder it got.
And do you know what happened?
I completely forgot that I love gardening. I forgot to have fun doing something I love.
Does this ever happen to you?
When it does, here are a couple of things to remember to ask yourself:
- “What if this didn’t have to be hard?” It’s a question I return to again and again when I find my brain veering off the path of useful thinking.
- “What’s possible here?” This shifts your brain into a higher level of thinking and allows your brain to get curious about other options.
- “What am I making this mean?” How you interpret your circumstances is everything and your brain can tell you things that just are neither true or useful.
Your brain loves to get you off-track and stay in the spin cycle of negativity. It is hardwired for it.
That’s how goals aren’t met and dreams are never realized.
It’s up to you to notice what’s happening and put on the brakes.
You have the power to stop the spin.
You can choose to think differently.
You have it in you to create the life you crave.
One thought at a time.
P.S. – It’s time for you to stop using “some day” thinking and start to take charge of your thoughts. They’ve created where you are now. But that doesn’t have to be where you stay.
