Commitment – Are You In?
I just got back from a few days at a mastermind retreat with coaches in Santa Barbara. We meet once a year and learn from incredibly talented speakers and each other. Our meeting space overlooked the ocean and the hotel was old Hollywood beautiful. Attention to detail is the cornerstone of their company culture and it showed.
Beautiful surroundings and deep learning.
It was powerful from right from the start.
On the first day, my mentor and founder of The Life Coach School, Brooke Castillo, posed a question to the group: “What do you really want to commit to?”
Seems like a pretty straight forward question, right?
Not so fast.
She went on to talk about what commitment really means and what are we willing to do every day to make our goals a reality. It’s about making a decision every day to do what you set out to do.
These decisions can get sidetracked because of all kinds of things:
Fear. Time. Money. Guilt. Worry. Judgement – yours and others. Failure.
When we allow these feelings into our world, nothing gets accomplished. Goals aren’t achieved. Dreams are dashed.
Is this something you’ve experienced, too?
Here’s an easier way to look at our large goals. We need to break them down into bite-sized daily decisions. Ask yourself this:
“What are the small decisions that I need to make now, so I won’t let myself down in the future?”
Then, make a list of them – no filter – just let your thoughts flow.
Now you have your list. Now you know what you can do, one step at a time, one day at a time.
Sometimes we get so caught up in not knowing “how” we’re going to do something that we get paralyzed and do nothing. “I don’t know how” is a toxic thought.
You don’t need to know how.
You just need to know why.
Then look at your list of next right steps – and take one.
Then another.
As leaders of our life, it is our responsibility to show up and live it to its fullest.
Let’s make a pact that from this day forward, we will not allow our dreams to be hijacked anymore.
Are you in?
