How to Find Your Leadership Guru
We’re a couple of weeks into 2016 and I’m wondering what’s happening in your world. The holidays are over and so is the frenzy of too much shopping, too many parties and too much eating.
Did you make any New Year’s resolutions that are now starting to wane? (I do something different and would love for you to join me.)
Now we’re back at work and the same old routine has kicked into gear. It’s the same thing every year for many of us and what’s interesting is that for some, the slump hits hard.
Are you feeling the slump hump tougher to climb?
I find the new year always an interesting time. People are trying to make changes to their lives – lose weight, exercise more, read more self-help books, work harder at… The fitness clubs are packed, weight-loss programs are in full swing, books are being downloaded – all good resources, for sure.
Yet, it seems that the focus is on looking “out there” for the solution to what ails us “in here”.
Well, what if you chose to do something different this year?
What if you consulted the most amazing resource that knows everything about you and the best solution to whatever challenge you are facing?
What if there was a mentor that I could connect you to that would be able to analyze your situation, discover the solution that would be the right fit for you and guide you through the process – would you be interested?
I have a coaching client that was in need of this exact thing.
“Melissa” is the queen of all things strive and drive. She is very successful in her job as a manager and is looked upon as a trailblazer in the company for whom she works. She consumes leadership and self-improvement books voraciously and attends seminars whenever she can. She has a full plate and has a difficult time keeping all the balls in the air (sound familiar?).
In one of our coaching sessions, she told me how overwhelmed she was feeling – that she “should” be able to handle everything and was looking for advice on what to do.
That’s when I asked her if I could introduce her to someone who would have all her right answers.
“Oh my God, yes!” was her response.
“Melissa, meet Melissa”, I said.
Wait – what?!
We all have an inner mentor – our very own leadership guru for our life – inside of us. All we have to do is slow down, be still and listen.
Ah, there’s the catch.
So much striving and driving disengages us from the ability to hear what our inner wise self is saying. We keep looking “out there” for someone we deem an expert to tell us how to transform ourselves or our lives, in the hopes that if we just follow this 5-step program or that 30-day habit, we will magically create what we really want.
And…
It seldom happens and doesn’t last.
Isn’t it time to start to seek counsel and advice from the one being that truly knows what your heart desires?
Yes, my friend, it is.
The next time you are all a flutter about this or that and are in need of some really good advice, I implore you to stop and find time to go within. Sit in a quiet place, close your eyes and start to quiet your mind.
When you’ve done that, ask your inner mentor what is your next right step? What do you need to know right in this moment?
Then, be still and listen.
The answer always comes.
