Why You Should Stop Worrying About What People Think
Worrying about what others think of us.
We have all dealt with it, battled with it and succumbed to it, and it has never made us a better person.
As Lao Tzu is so famously quoted as saying, “Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.”
Tzu has a very good point: caring about what other people think will only keep you from reaching your true potential and enjoying a full and satisfying life. So many of us know this and yet we are still imprisoned by the same thoughts and the same concern.
It’s not so much that you should or shouldn’t care.
It’s about what you make it mean.
It’s Your Life – Not Theirs
Whether it is your friend, your sibling or your mother-in-law passing judgment, remind yourself that your life is not their life. What you choose to do with yourself is none of their business.
People are allowed to think whatever they want, just as you are. What they think or how they feel about you will not change who you are or change your value – that is, unless you give them that power.
No one has earned the right to control your life through their opinions. This is your life and this is your happiness. You are the only person who needs to give yourself approval for how you choose to live.
Others May Not Have Your Best Interests at Heart
There are people in this world who love to see other people fail while others simply do not know what is best for you.
You have taken the time to at least invest in exploring a thought or an idea, and you owe it to yourself to pursue it. Yes, it may not be as great as you thought but what if it is even more fantastic than you ever imagined?
What if what the path you choose leads you on a transcendent journey which helps you achieve things beyond your wildest dreams?
Turn the outside noise volume way down and while you’re at it, you’ll want to unplug from that negative voice in your own mind that says you daft if you try.
At the end of the day, trust yourself. No one but you knows exactly what it is that you need to nurture and grow.
What Works For One Person May Not Work For the Next
People have opinions about your life based on their own life experiences and what they have done or would do because of those experiences. They see through the filter of their own life. They have not trudged through the same disappointments, had the same education or celebrated the same successes as you have.
They also do not have the same qualities as you do. You may be more compassionate, more tenacious, or a better out-of-the-box thinker.
Try this new mantra, “Whatever you think of me is none of my business.”
Whatever path it is that you choose to follow, you are choosing it because it answers to your strengths.
Defend your power and celebrate your unique qualities through your life choices. We all only have a limited amount of time on this earth, and we owe it to ourselves to live it to the fullest.
