The Truth about Courage

Courage.

We’ve had so many opportunities to practice courage in 2021 and as we are approaching the end of the year, I am reflecting on courageousness.

Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is feeling that fear and doing whatever it is you need to do anyway.

In particular, this year, I had the privilege and honor of seeing and spending time with my dear friend during her final days on earth.

That woman was a force; she was a force to be reckoned with. And I had the privilege of being with her and talking about things that you only talk about at the end of your life.

Throughout her illness, she fought a hard battle, but we both knew what was going on and it was such a privilege to be with her.

It takes courage to have those difficult conversations.

I think about you when I think about Courage.

It takes courage to be a high-achieving professional woman.

It takes courage to lead other people, particularly when you’re not sure if you’re going in the right direction.

It takes courage to speak up on topics that you feel strongly about.

It takes courage to be vulnerable.

It takes courage to show up at work authentically.

It takes courage to have confidence in yourself.

It takes courage not to worry about what other people think and just do you.

Courage is like the badass badge of honor.

Courage gets you through everything.

And I’m guessing that if you were to look at the past several weeks and months, the years in your life – you’d see so many instances where you had to be courageous.

And you might not even remember what you did, but I’m telling you, with every step of harnessing that Courage, you grew.

You get bigger, you expand, you build your capacity to do more, to have more and to be more courageous.

You have an amazing quality.

As I reflect on this special time with my dear friend and our long friendship, I want to acknowledge myself for one of the times in my life when I was truly courageous.

You see, I believe it’s crucial to see ourselves in a clear light and recognize the courage within.

I have dealt with a lot of trauma in my life, especially in my childhood and learned at an early age how to survive and protect myself from the emotional abuse I endured.

It takes an extraordinary amount of courage to do that.

I’m proud of myself for that.

I’m going to own my courage and my determination to not just survive but thrive. I’m grateful for that.

No matter where you are in your life, whatever hardships or challenges you have, I know you have it in you to get through.

I know you have the courage to persevere – even when you doubt yourself.

You have the courage to wake up everyday, look in that mirror and tell yourself, “I got you sweet girl.”

Believe in yourself. I do.
