Are you confused about your worth?

I see this all the time in the successful women I coach.

They confuse the value they provide their employer with their personal worth.

They put in long hours, go above-and-beyond on projects, take on the work of two people and assume their boss is noticing all their extra efforts.

They feel entitled to a certain wage and feel they’re “worth” it.

And no wonder. Everywhere you look there’s advice on how to negotiate your salary or bonus by “asking for what you’re worth.”

It’s a deadly trap.

Why?

Because when you’re negotiating for yourself, you try to convince the other person that you’re worth what you’re asking for. They may have a different perception of that. It’s very subjective.

Men ask for the salary at the job interview. Women accept the job offer and wait to prove their worth before asking for the compensation they desire.

Instead, try coming from a place of trading value; that’s what negotiating is really about.

You are trading the value of your performance for compensation for that performance.

Do your research. Understand what the salary range is for the position you currently hold or are going after.

Know what you really want and what your bottom line is. It may not be tied only to money. Culture and shared values may play a larger role in your decision to stay with your current employer.

Your worth has nothing to do with how much you get paid.

Your worth has nothing to do with what someone else thinks you should earn.

Your worth has nothing do to with how hard you work.

Your worth as a person – a human being – is priceless.
