Are You an Overachiever Who is Underachieving?

On one of my recent early morning walks, I listened to one of my favorite podcasts and the topic was under-earning. Now, this is not what you might think it is; not making enough money. Under-earning is when you earn less than you’re capable of earning when you desire to earn more. Fascinating concept to think about, right?

So on that same walk, I started thinking about the people I serve in my executive coaching practice and how this concept might apply to them in a slightly different way.

My clients are high-achieving entrepreneurs, small business owners or leaders in their organization. They have achieved a certain level of success and hire me to help improve their communication and influence skills while strengthening their confidence so they can achieve the next level.

Well, if they are high-achievers, why do they need a coach?

Because they have a brain that can hold them back.

You do, too.

We all do.

Think about it.

Most sports teams have coaches involved: baseball, football, tennis, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, swimming, diving – you get the picture.

These athletes are high achievers – certainly at the collegiate and professional levels – and they work hard in their jobs. They are smart, talented, focused – all things that are necessary to be successful and perform at a high level.

They have a coach.

Why?

Because coaches can see things you are too close to see.

Coaches can show you how you’re showing up and what you will want to change in order to achieve your goal.

And it all boils down to changing what you think.

If you are an overachiever who is currently underachieving, listen up.

This is costing you.

It’s costing you financially and professionally. And it’s costing you in your personal life.

The amount of time you spend thinking about how you’re not achieving at the level you want to and know you are capable of is enormous. You worry about getting that next sale or what your team will think of you or how this will impact your income. You spin on all the negative thoughts your brain tells you about – you.

Have you fallen into bad habits?

Are you listening to the voice of self-doubt?

Are you suffering from the dreaded compare/despair syndrome?

Are you blaming others for your lackluster performance?

This spinning creates undue stress in your relationships. This messes with your self-esteem. Your world becomes very small because all you think about is that you’re not doing what you know you’re capable of.

If this sounds like something you’re going through right now, take heart. There is hope. There is a solution.

Hire a coach.
