Are You Tracking Your Wins?
In today’s world of bigger, better, faster – we focus on what needs fixing rather than what’s already working.
As a manager or leader, you’re often watching for problems that need solving because that’s what’s coming across your desk most often. It’s what you’re told managing is all about – fixing problems:
- Someone on your team needs your help with a difficult coworker.
- There’s a deadline looming and unless you dive in to help, it won’t be met.
- Losing top talent
- Finding top talent
- Budget cuts
- Non-productive team
- Poor communication
This is a small representation of what you deal with on a daily basis. Plus – you’ve got to get your work done, too.
Ugh.
Ever notice how you forget to pat yourself on the back for what you’re doing right?
When you only focus on putting out fires and crossing things off our To Do list, you’re missing a key component to achieving success – feeling successful.
You’ve got choices.
Solution?
Start to track your wins.
I coached a successful entrepreneur who was totally focused on making sure it all gets done. For years she pushed herself to exhaustion thinking about next steps, handling every single aspect of her business herself. Even when she did hire, she hovered over projects like an overprotective parent.
Through our coaching sessions and by using the tools I taught her, she had an epiphany: If she continues to focus only on what needs doing, fixing, saving, etc. she’ll burn herself out.
And that old saying is so true, “If mama ain’t happy, then nobody’s happy.”
That’s when I coached her to change her focus and start tracking her wins – no matter how small.
- Hired a VA for a design project
- Let the VA do her job without me hovering
- Communicated changes needed to VA
- Trusted VA to do the job she was hired to do
You get the picture. While this may not seem like a big deal, it really was.
She felt herself make the smallest of shifts in her mindset and behavior which felt so freeing. No longer was she trying to control the world. She just had to focus on how she was showing up and celebrate that.
(Reality check – we can only control ourselves.)
When you start to track what you’re doing well and how you’re showing up, you begin to see things through a new lens; one of positivity and possibility. You make better more effective choices.
At the end of each day, review your wins. This practice is a refreshingly new approach to the day-to-day challenges of being a leader or business owner.
Once you’ve made it a habit to track your wins, start to use this tool with your team. No need to tell them what you’re doing. Make a point of noticing when they’re doing something good – and then tell them you noticed.
After a while, something cool happens.
Your team becomes more productive.
You retain top talent.
Difficult coworkers aren’t as difficult anymore.
Your confidence soars.
When you focus on what’s working and what’s going right, it’s so much easier to deal with what needs fixing.
You make choices every minute of every hour of every day.
What will you choose to focus on?
Track your wins and notice how successful you feel.
