Do You Trust Yourself to Lead Authentically?
When I became an entrepreneur, I had no idea what I was doing.
I had no business plan.
I had no mentors.
I had no goals.
I wanted to make money and stay home with my kids.
So, I looked to the outside world for direction. I looked at what everyone else was doing in their businesses and tried to copy that.
Some of it worked.
Most didn’t.
What I got out of it was a lot of frustration and wasted time doing things that didn’t align with who I was.
I didn’t think I knew enough to run a successful business.
I didn’t trust myself to lead like I would do it.
How about you?
Are you looking to everyone else to see how you ‘should’ be doing it?
What if you really do know how to lead your team to success?
3 Tips to Learn to Lead Like You:
- Tune Out – With so many resources available in this fast-paced electronic world we live in, it’s overwhelming to say the least. Looking to others for their expert advice through books, blogs, podcasts can helpful as long as you don’t use it as a substitute for what you already know to be true or the right course of action. My invitation: Tune out the noise of all the experts for one month. Stop reading. Stop Googling. Stop searching. Remove that extra noise from your daily life so you can focus on what’s important.
- Tune In – A biproduct of this crazy-busy life you lead is the loss of hearing what your intuition wants you to know. From that first cup of coffee to when you fall into bed exhausted, I’m guessing you don’t take time to tune in to the all-knowing and most informative Y.O.U. That’s right. Tuning in to your inner wise self is the quickest way to discover your next steps. My invitation: Take 5 minutes every day (yes, you can schedule that time for yourself), and tune in – to yourself. Be in a quiet space. Take a few long, deep breaths to help quiet the mind. Ask yourself, “What do I need to know today?” Then, wait. That’s the challenging part. Wait to hear what you need to hear. The answer will not be rushed or frantic (that’s your Inner Critic trying to take over). It will be calm and steady. That’s how you’ll know you’re listening to your inner wise self.
- Turn On – Once you’ve stopped jumping from one guru to another and have started to get comfortable slowing down to hear what your inner guru has to say, it’s time to turn on. My invitation: Do You. Give yourself permission to show up authentically, regardless of what others might think. Bring your personal flare into your workplace. Say what you’re thinking in that meeting when you see a plan that has flaws. Offer your ideas on a new project proactively instead of waiting for someone to ask. Reach out to your team to find out what they need that’s missing and create an environment that aligns with team goals and values.
In my executive coaching practice, I help leaders figure out who they are and how they want to lead. I hold the mirror for them so they can see clearly what needs to stay and what needs to change. It’s a powerful and life changing experience.
I want you to have that.
