Why You Aren’t Achieving Your Goals
You get fired up.
You set a goal.
You don’t take the action necessary to achieve that goal.
You don’t reach your goal.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
Does this sound familiar?
People create goals about many things, but often don’t achieve them because they aren’t taking action. They know what they need to do but they still feel stuck. They wait until they feel motivated or inspired. Apps and books won’t help if you don’t have the right mindset.
It’s an inside job.
The first step is uncovering what’s going on in your mind and uncovering your current thought patterns that are creating your current feelings. Those feelings drive your actions and create your results. So many of us think life just happens to us. We think we have no control over it.
Our future is a blank canvas, so we have to access a new skill set in order to create a new future. We must literally create new thoughts that we’ve never thought before in order to create a new future that we’ve never created before.

When you notice yourself dreaming, you will notice your brain wanting to go to your past to find evidence of possibility. It will want to go to your past for the how. It will want to figure out “what do I already know how to think that can create this.” If there’s nothing there, your brain will want to shut down because your brain is programmed for survival. It wants to use all the things that it’s learned in order to continue to stay alive. What your primitive brain doesn’t realize is that you’re good, you don’t need to focus on those survival things.
We create solutions to any of our current problems by thinking in a new way.
We have over 60,000 thoughts pass through our brains each day and 95% of those thoughts are just repeats from the day before, week before, etc. And 80% of those thoughts are negative.
You need to start thinking outside of the box, thinking brand new thoughts that you’ve never thought before. What got you here won’t get you there.
The process starts by finding out exactly what is creating our current results. You are the cause of your current results.
5-Step Process:
- Notice your thoughts.
- Name and feel your feelings.
- Find the thoughts causing those feelings.
- Notice how those feelings are creating your actions and results.
- Choose new thoughts.
Once you understand your patterns and the thoughts causing them, you will inevitably want to change your thinking. Just being the witness, just being aware of your current pattern inevitably starts to change it. When you observe something from that compassionate witness, you automatically are subtly changing yourself.
Thought creation is a skill.
You find your current thought causing your current pattern. You decide what you want to think and feel instead. You create a new thought. You go through the process of committing to believing the new thought.
Rehearse it, practice it, and believe it ahead of time.
There are two things to remember when it comes to a new thought you want to believe: You have to believe it and it has to feel better.
For example: You can’t go from “I hate my body” to “I love my body” if you don’t believe that. Instead, try to go from “I hate my body” to “I have a body.” Now, “I have a body” feels better than “I hate my body” and it’s believable. It’s not all sunshine yet, but that’s okay.
You’ve made that shift. You’ve created a new thought. You believe it. When we talk about believing new thoughts, there’s a process to believing and the better your new thought is, the easier it will be for you to believe it. The idea is that when you completely believe it, then you will create the result to reflect the belief.
Questions to ask yourself:
“Who would you be without this thought? If you literally didn’t think the thought, how would your life be different?” If you didn’t think the thought, “I have to lose weight.” If you didn’t think the thought, “I’m not good enough. I can’t do this. I don’t have what it takes.” Whatever that negative thought is, imagine your life if you couldn’t think it, what would be different about your life? (credit to Byron Katie for the question)
“How would you like to think instead?” You might come up with something you don’t yet believe.
So, to bridge the gap between the old thought and the new one, you can add the modifier to the beginning; “I’m open to the idea that I can lose weight. I’m open to the idea that I am an amazing human being that will make a difference in the world.”
Beliefs are just thoughts that you’ve been thinking for a long time. They have deep neuropathways in your brain. You can change your beliefs anytime by choosing new thoughts that are believable to you. When you do, you will feel differently which will cause you to take action and achieve the results you crave.
