Episode 66: Learning To Receive Can Change Your Life

Someday.

Do you hear yourself saying that about things or adventures you want to experience? As women, we put off our desires because we’ve been socialized to take care of others, nurture others, give to others.

We’ve also been trained that giving to ourselves is selfish. Not true.

When we allow ourselves to receive, we become better. We deepen our own connection to ourselves and the Divine. We become more approachable and the relationships we have become richer.

This week’s episode gives you a taste of what that could look like and an opportunity of a lifetime to make it happen for you.

What You’ll Learn:

  • My personal thank you
  • How time flies when you ignore habits that don’t serve you
  • How women are “built” to give
  • The importance of learning to receive

You are listening to episode 66 of the Create What You Crave Podcast. The one where I talk about giving vs receiving.

Hello my friends and happy Worthiness Wednesday! How are you?

We’re coming off a long holiday weekend here in the states and I hope you took the time to play and have some fun. I know there were lots of burgers and hot dogs being grilled and boat rides and picnics.

I know for many of you the Memorial Day weekend is very difficult because you’ve lost a loved one who served our country in the armed forces.

I want to say thank you to you and I hope that doesn’t sound trite. I have no idea what it is like or what you’re going through.

I wanted to recognize you and let you know I see you and feel a tremendous amount of love and gratitude for you and your loved one who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we could be free to have our picnics and family gatherings.

I also hope you took some time to nurture yourself and slow down so you could enjoy the long weekend.

It’s so important to do that – to give yourself space to breathe, commune with nature, experience pleasure, and receive.

Learning To Receive After Giving, Giving, Giving

We are not taught to do that, are we? Learning to receive.

I was talking to a woman in the skincare industry who I’ve worked with for years and she was sharing with me about how much she gives to her girls and that she doesn’t feel appreciated for it.

These girls are grown and out of the house – one married and one engaged. She is still giving, giving, giving to them, and not getting any gratitude in return.

This is a pattern of behavior that is rooted in a belief that the more you give the better mom you are.

So not true.

Women have been fed this lie all our lives. You’ve heard the phrase, “give until it hurts” or “it’s better to give than to receive”, right?

What a setup for depleting yourself. This is habitual thinking that is backed by societal pressure – and it’s hard to break free of that.

We all have mental blocks. Some of us have money mindset blocks. Some of us have deserving issues – worthiness issues. They come from our childhood – we were taught certain things our parents believed.

They come from society – we are socialized to believe certain things.

Around money, it could be…

“Money is bad”

“People with money are selfish”

“They think they are better than everybody else.”

Or the big one, “money is the root of all evil.” Sheesh! That is SO untrue.

We are taught not to even want to receive.

We’re not taught:

  • How to receive
  • That it’s critical to receive.

This affects our income, our relationships, our health – so much more.

What are we taught?

To give and give and give. It’s even how our bodies are made, right?

We give birth. We give life. Isn’t that enough?

I mean really think about that. We have the capacity to give life! Isn’t that the highest bar you can reach in terms of giving? The ultimate giving!

I mean that’s kind of it, right? You’re done giving. I’m not talking about being selfish here and expecting people to do everything and hand everything to you either. That’s not who you are. You’re not selfish.

The Importance Of Learning To Receive

If you’re listening to this podcast, you’re a high achiever. You are a giver. You give to others.

You give your all, but when do you ever give to yourself?

And I don’t mean pedicures and manicures. I don’t mean book club with lots of wine. When do you truly give to yourself and do you know how to receive?

Do you know how to truly receive:

  • a gift
  • a compliment
  • nurturing
  • the spaciousness of time
  • time to yourself
  • love
  • pleasure

I’m not talking just about sexual pleasure. I’m talking about all pleasure.

Do you allow yourself to experience pleasure and receive it?
