Episode 69: How To Stop Resisting What You Want
Do you know what you want? Really want? So many of us don’t. The question is, how do you stop resisting what you truly want in life?
We resist what we want because we’re listening to the automatic thoughts our brains are serving up. We don’t take the time to let those go and listen to what our inner wisdom has to say.
This week’s episode helps you blast past those thoughts and get down to some serious dreaming.
What You’ll Learn:
- Why your brain holds you back
- The BS reasons why you resist
- Why taking time to find out what you want is crucial to happiness
- Three questions to ask yourself today
You get to dream bigger than ever, but only with a mindset that is centered on what’s possible for you.

Episode 69: How To Stop Resisting What You Want (Transcript)

Hey there! Welcome to the podcast and oh my friends have you been busy!
In my last episode, I talked about saying yes to what you want and asking yourself some key questions to help you discern what that is.
Oh, honey hush, did I get some emails on that one. So many of you don’t know what you want or give in to what your brain was telling you was not possible for you.
Most of it was around resistance to your wants and desires.
You’re too old. You’re too busy. Who do you think you are wanting…? It’s impossible. It won’t work. You’re not ready.
Whew – so many imposter syndrome-type thoughts.
So, that’s what I’m talking about today because I want to help you get past that resistance so you can let your imagination show you what’s possible for you when you dream.
I heard from you that your critical brain took over, you know, like my inner critical brain that I named Ursula after the Disney character in “The Little Mermaid”.
Your Ursula brain told you all the reasons why you can’t possibly want what you want or make your dreams come true.
It gave you all kinds of BS reasons like:
- You’d be selfish
- You don’t have the time to spend away from your family and work obligations.
- You don’t have the money to spend lavishly and foolishly on a dream trip you’ve been fantasizing about for years.
It would be more practical to use that money for home maintenance or get a new car. Notice the judgment – “lavish” is very subjective, but it creates guilt in you.
Your Ursula brain knows how to push your buttons.
Who are you to start a foundation that helps young single moms finish high school and go to college so they can be empowered to create a good life for themselves and their kids?
You’d be a better mom, wife, leader, friend, person – if you put your dreams back in the box where they belong and forgot all about them.
Whoa! Stop right there my friends. That’s what got you here in the first place. You put yourself last and are completely fried from doing everything for others and not filling your cup.
How do you allow yourself to stop resisting and start dreaming?
Create a regular practice of dreaming.
It’s not hard, it just takes practice.
Dedicate Time Every Day
You’ll dedicate time each day (yes you have at least a minute. If you shower daily or brush your teeth daily or pour coffee in a mug or drive to the office – then you have time to dream).
Write Those Dreams Down
I prefer to write things down in a journal so I can go back and review, but I don’t want you to get stuck on doing it perfectly. Let’s not let that Perfectionist Derailer™ try to hijack our fun, OK?
You can also put a Post-It® Note on your bathroom mirror, your coffee maker, your computer screen to remind yourself to take a dream break and then DO IT.
Allow your brain to wander

What are you resisting? Think about want to have in your life.
What do your relationships look like? Friendships. Significant other. Kids if you have them. Siblings if you have them. Parents if they’re still with you. Co-workers. Your boss. All of it. Envision what you want for those different relationships in your life.
Dream about your desires.
Do you want to travel the world and work remotely while sipping a freshly made cappuccino at a café in Tuscany?
Have you always wanted to take ballroom dancing lessons and enter contests wearing a beautiful gown but never did because your brain told you that was silly?
What are you craving? Just let your brain run wild!
Yes, you’re still going to have negative thoughts come through your mind.
Remember why they are there in the first place.
That’s your primitive brain kicking in to keep you safe, to make sure you don’t go out of the cave. The goal is not to eliminate those. The goal is to not let them stop you anymore.
Just because the thought is there doesn’t mean you need to believe it. Your job becomes allowing it to sit in the car with you without letting it grab the wheel and drive the car. The negative thoughts aren’t going anywhere. Your work is to stop believing them.
Let’s Recap
- Who do you want to be?
- What do you want to do?
- What do you want to have?
Notice when Ursula shows up and keep her in the backseat. Nobody likes a backseat driver anyway.
Sit up front where you belong and take charge of where you’re heading. Let your inner wise self be your guide and follow her directions. She knows the way.
Alright, my friends. Let me know what you’re dreaming and I’ll be cheering you on, as always.
And if you just can’t seem to get there, reach out to me. Schedule your Discovery Call with me this week and let’s get after those dreams. They are waiting for you to show up and make them come true.
Until next time, remember:
I believe in you.
